This is the single question our entire product exists to answer, so we're going to answer it properly — metal by metal, water by water, because "it depends" isn't actually an answer.
Short version: the water itself matters less than what it's touching.
The gentlest of the group — no salt, no chlorine, just water and whatever's in your shampoo. Steel and solid gold handle it indefinitely. Vermeil and silver can handle it too, just not several times a day forever without eventually showing it.
Salt is more aggressive than tap water — it speeds up any reaction a metal is prone to. Steel doesn't have one, so it's unaffected. Plated brass is where salt water does the most visible damage, often within a single trip.
Chlorine is a bleaching agent, and it's harder on plating and softer metals than salt water is. It can even affect solid gold's shine over time with heavy exposure, though not its structure. Steel is unaffected.
Hot, chlorinated, and often more concentrated than a swimming pool — a hot tub is the single harshest environment jewelry regularly meets. Heat speeds up every chemical reaction involved, which is exactly what accelerates tarnishing and plating wear.
This is the one place we'd genuinely say take it off, even the steel — not because it'll damage it, but because heat plus chemicals plus skin is also where any base-metal allergic reaction is most likely to flare up.
Sweat is mildly acidic, and it's in contact with your jewelry for far more hours a day than the shower or the sea ever is. This is actually the main reason plated brass turns fingers green — not water exposure in one dramatic moment, but constant low-level contact.
Depends what's underneath the plating. PVD gold over 316L steel handles the shower indefinitely. Gold plated over brass — most inexpensive "gold" jewelry — will wear through and tarnish within weeks of regular water contact.
